Hi, I am Vivien, I was diagnosed with AML in July. Was in remission after first round of chemo and now had 2 rounds. Been to see consultant at Cambridge who recommends SCT. I am quite anxious of how rigourous this will be and wonder if , at 67, I am up to this. Any seniors who can share experience would me most welcoming
Hi Vivien,
I’m Rachel- Lead Nurse here at Anthony Nolan. If you look under the partners, friends and carers subject heading there is a thread from a couple of years ago along a similar line to your query. ‘Does anyone have experience of a SCT for AML for someone over 70?’
This may be of help to you to look at and might answer some of your questions.
Whilst age does play a part ultimately decisions and recovery are influenced by individual patients overall fitness and transplant would only be offered if your medical team feel you are fit enough for the treatment.
Hopefully others will see this thread and contribute with their own experiences but if you would like the opportunity to speak to one of our team at Anthony Nolan about what to expect during treatment and recover, you can call our helpline mon-fri 9-5.
Hope that’s of some help to you
Rachel
Thanks for your help Rachel
Hello Vivien,
I had my sct in 2021. I was 59.
If you’re interested we can chat on the forum.
Unfortunately I have chronic Gvhd, but maybe I can give you a realistic perspective.
Greetings,
Helen
Hi Helen, thanks for your reply.
Did you mean had or have chronic Gvhd?
Do they treat this with steroids?
I am currently struggling to get white blood cell counts up, after last round of chemo. Had next round deferred twice and now having injections to stimulate BM’. Did you experience this?
How long did you stay in hospital?
I am starting pre transplant tests next week, I think they are planning January for transplant
Kind regards, Vivien
I have had chronic Gvhd from about 2..3 weeks after 2021 sct.
I was in hospital for 9 months and after that Reha for 2 weeks.
I was taken in in an ambulance after I got a second opinion cos I wasn’t well.
My Gvhd is/was… ocular, gut, skin, oral. But thankfully not lung. Not yet.
I’m working voluntarily…very happy and glad I took my chance.
Apparently the Drs think my positive attitude has made the difference.
